The standard was developed as an OpenSource alternative to GIFs - GIF is a
propriety format and can't [legally] be used [by developers] without a
licencing agreement. I've sometimes used PNGs because of the lossless
compression - but I do feel that it's a *very* underused and undervalued
format - even in the Linux community. I'd personally like to see it much
more widely used - and supported (although support for it is more widespread
now)
