Usually they don't know they're being photographed.  I do ask people to
pose early in the evening when there's a bit of light but later, when
people are dancing, the lights are low and they're fairly oblivious to
what's going on.  The DJ's color strobes are usually firing away too.
All-in-all there's a lot of light flashing going on and my strobes tend
to get lost in the din.  I think people take their cue from the 
on-camera flash which is what they're used to.  I'm not sure they're 
even aware that the "room lights" flash when my on-camera flash fires.
