This has been discussed more than once on the list and I think even
within the past few months and you may be able to find some of that in
the archives. Here are some notes from a longer ago episode:

Thanks to C.H. Ling for his tips and Mark Dapoz for his on-line manuals.

Carefully removed the lens flange, then very, very carefully removed the
shutter speed ring. Yep . . . gotta watch for the reset pin and spring
when pulling off the lens mounting flange. Cleaned the shutter speed
ring thoroughly, put a very tiny amount of white lithium grease on the
detent ball and extremely thin coating on the ring detents that mate
with it, then very carefully reassembled the lens mount.

Works smoother now than it ever has.

Thanks Bill . . .
Before starting the "surgery" I had visions of trying to find the ball
bearing . . . or the spring and pin . . . during/after disassembly. The
spring almost got away as I was reassembling it.

Looked at the exploded parts view (thanks to Mark Dapoz) and made a
reassembly risk assessment. Disassembly isn't usually that hard; proper
reassembly can be very difficult. Akin to falling from a ladder; not
the fall that hurts; it's the sudden stop at the end. Took the risk as
I want three 35mm bodies on hand this next weekend for a wedding shoot;
having a fourth body as a spare makes me feel better.

Used a ring-light large magnifier on a stand and worked in a shallow
tray to limit things rolling off very far. The only tools required were
a pair of forceps (handling the pin and spring) and very small jewelers
philips driver. The critical part was watching the pin and spring, and
ensuring the registration of the shutter speed gear train at the bottom
didn't get out of whack.

The SS Ring only has the detents and a slot for a tab that mates with
and turns another ring under it . . . the second ring under the SS Ring
has the teeth that drive the SS gear in the bottom of the camera . . .
and fortunately it doesn't have to be removed (but it is loose at that
point and can fall out). Were it any deeper than removing the flange
and SS ring, or if cleaning and very judicious lubrication of the detent
bearing/surfaces hadn't solved the problem, it would have gone to one f
them. It's about as deep as I want to dig into one and [seriously]
**don't** want to do this routinely.

John H. has overhauled two bodies for me (he's closer than Clint) . . .
did great work on both.

Thanks,

Luckily the bb on that model tends not to fly away. That job is left to
the spot switch and spring. Glad it worked out for you.
