I have always heard that MF lenses didn't have the resolving power of
35mm lenses. Not because it's not possible but because they didn't have
to. You can still get lots more detail by using lower resolution but
spread over a larger area.

But I just decided to check what's going on in the MF digital arena and
see that Phase One has a 39 MP back which is 49.1 x 36.8 mm or just a
bit more than twice the size of a 35mm frame. When you work this out it
gives an equivalent density of about 18MP for a full size 35mm frame or
a bit more than the current Canon pro level cameras at 16MP.

At least one Canonite who has been lusting after Zuiko 18, 21 and 24mm
lenses and other brands besides Canon says that even the best of the
best can't resolve the full 16MP all the way across the frame. One
wonders theb what Phase One recommends for a lens to resolve all of
their 39MP.
