I believe N*kon may have hit the nail on the head with
the D80. Essentially it replaces the D70s which was a
decent camera. Not as slimmed down as the D50. I have
heard good things about the design of the body. 

It is not a C*non 5d and N*kon wasnt going after that
segment with the D80.

Honestly I dont think you can go wrong with a N*kon.
Hate to say that but we have to face the harsh reality
that there are two manufacturer's kicking butt right
now.
