Hans, I was giving one of those typical Japanese half-smiles - kinda like "I
know but you don't know...." or "love to tell you but can't..." :)

A digital back? I would have imagined the OM-5 to be something like an

Most certainly not, Hans. The OM-4Ti would not have those features. No one
would want to depurify the camera at all. The OM-4Ti is still a sacred
sanctity at Olympus and is spoken in hushed tones..... :D

The decision to trash Maitani's design was probably even a bigger

...yes and millions would have thought so too because we kinda think about
Olympus with our hearts but analytically, it wouldn't have worked against a
mass changing tide. For the same reason, Leica nearly went to the wall if
not for the 11th hour buyback, which only happened a few short months ago.
Some brave guy on DPReview likened Olympus to Porsche. No, I liken Olympus
somewhat to being the Japanese version of Leica, except cleverer and better
thinkers. Oskar Barnack was legendary but Maitani-san is MYTHICAL.

Do you know if the prototype back needed serious modifications for the

Yes, there are substantial modifications. No, even though it would have
physically fitted on to any OM SLR including the OM-4Ti, it wouldn't have
worked with any of them because there would not be any interface
compatibilities.
