IMHO, the one big difference is whether the bird is flying or not.
If flying, bird's size - speed - distance to camera are a challenge to
focusing and makes me want accurate autofocus. Also, high speed film is
needed. And since most common lighting conditions show them darker than the
surroundings, there are also metering problems.
Bird behaviour is another thing to take into account, not all of them fly
away while you're looking at them through the camera, some may even show a
'curiosity' behaviour and may start looking at you from a safe distance
after a while. But they won't be flying in this situation.
