Maybe they were having a problem with their mail server like the one I
had today with the web server at my client's. Trying to do some updates,
I noticed that performance was *terrible*. Ten seconds at some points to
just get screen updates.

Now, we just don't get that sort of traffic. Ever.

So I'm thinking "virus" or DDOS attack (although why anyone would bother
running DDOS on a little, rural school district is beyond me).

Fire up the network analyzer and see that I'm getting short, repeated
packets at the rate of many thousands per minute from ONE machine at one
of the other schools, inside the firewall. All to the same web page.

Drive the mile to the school, walk into the classroom where the machine
lives, and find....

One of the kids, after having opened the browser to the school's home
page, left a headset sitting on the desk in such a way that the band
connecting the earpieces was resting on the keyboard. It just barely
pressed one of the function keys, just enough. F5, it just so happens,
which, in IE, means "Refresh". Had I moved the headset before I sat down
in front of the machine, I'd *never* have figured out what had been
wrong.
