The problem is, the only flash I have at this point has not options at
all. It can only sit on top of the camera, point directly at the
subject, and provide a garishly huge amount of light. No low power
mode, no off-camera capabilities, no rotating/tilting head. Perhaps I
could make some sort of diffuser/reflector, but I think I'll just wait
until I get a better flash. I tried some shots with it, and the poor
little birdy came out way more exposed than the rest of the frame.

I certainly agree with you that a good flash would have helped, but I'm
pretty certain my flash wouldn't have!

'Scuse me for ignoring your actual questions and picking up on this
point,
but flash lighting actually gets softer when photographing small
subjects
with the flash head close by.

If you can get the flash off-camera and close to the subject, you should
be
able to get some nice, shape-revealing side lighting, you'll be able to
use
a relatively low power flash (which also means v.short duration, good
for
motion freezing), small aperture, isolate the background by differential
illumination and have a softer light than you'd get with the flash head
further away.
