There were a number of early Sunpak flashes where, when the shoe lock was
tightened, it actually lifted the flash's contacts up off the shoe!

While the shoe is off the camera, try pushing on the small pin in the center
of the post that screws into the top of the camera (this is a 1, not a 1n,
right?).  The pin should be under pressure -- it should spring back out when
you push on it.  If not, the contact is bent or broken inside.

And while the shoe is off, take a tissue and make a small point in it, then
twist this down into the opening in the top of the camera and twist around a
bit, then blow the hole out with air.  Often a small sliver of metal will
scrape off the threads and drop down into the bottom of the opening,
shorting the sych.
