comments (in German) on that topic. I do translate a bit ...
Several camera makers announced some malfunctioning sensors.
All promise to take care of these problems by cost free
repairs -- even for models beyond regular guarentee times.

Origin of problems are Sony CCD sensors made between 10/2002
and 03/2004. At that time frame is said to be critical by
Sony. A reason given for the problems are wires getting
loose, wires from/to the CCD sensor.

Sony had experimented with the bonding chemicals to increase
output rate. Some jodine related substance creates most
troubles. It evaporates and corroded the wires. The
manufacturing process is altered since and thought to be
corrected now.

More than 100 model are involved, reaching from PDAs to
video cams. All of them are threatened by early death.

'The Imaging Resource' reports that Sony is planning to
repay all expenses the camera makers run into when
doing their cost free customer care programs. That may
look like an incalculatable step, but may be the only
thing Sony can do to keep the makers as customers.
