Quoting from last week's review in Amateur Photographer:

"On Epson's own media - notably Premium Glossy Photo Paper - greyscale
images ar every neutral. It is commendable that prints made using the 'Best
Photo' setting with either black inkalone or the full colour inkset are
virtually identical. Indeed, excellent results are to be had by using the
colour inks, the Epson Standard colour mode and then decreasing the
saturation in the print driver to its minimum(-25). The resulting prints
(on Epson's glossy paper) are very slightly purple under fluorescent
lighting, but exhibit more than acceptable neutrality under daylight viewing
conditions, with no discernible colour shifts across the tonal range."

To be honest, I've only done a little bit of B&W printing with my 1800. I
already have a darkroom, so there's nothing new for me to set up.

That said, given the quality of the output in my color work, and the quality
of my initial b&w prints, I'd absolutely plan to scan negs and print
digitally before I'd set up a darkroom.
