My 1.4x seems to have a rubber like coating around the edge of the front 
element. There might be metal underneath it, but I don't see any signs of 
it. It also has a teeny-weensy, itsy-bitsy,  chip on the edge of it. I know 
neither when nor how the chip got there and it probably doesn't make any 
significant difference. My 180/2.8 ser no 100177 also has faint marks on the 
baffle - I do know when they got there. Judging by the marks, the glass 
element probably just touches the baffle while the material around the 
element leaves the marks on it. YMMV

Probably the 1.4X can be used with the less than 200,000 serial no. 180/2.8 
most of the time. However I suspect the tiny interference may cause someone 
some grief.
