You are correct in my experience. The 300D, and I suppose the other EOS
DSLRs, gives a focus indication when used in MF mode with AF lenses.
Unfortunately, it does not do so with MF lenses. A shame.

This is true. However, a couple of limitations.

First, the area covered by the AF sensors is rather large, larger than
the black outlines, as you can see here
<http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos300d/page17.asp>. So if you
are focusing on a page of text that is not square to the camera, the
little red light of any or all of the focus points on the central
horizontal axis will stay on, perhaps blinking as you move the focus,
over quite a range of focus in front of and behind the lines you want in
focus with others going out of focus above and below. You could possibly
focus using the top or bottom point alone, then frame. In any case,
there are non-trivial issues with this technique with some subjects.

Second, it works better with some lenses than others. The later (no I
don't know exact criteria) Can*n USM lenses do this quite gracefully.
With other lenses, both Can*n and 3rd party, turning the focus ring
turns the focus motor, making funny noises, uneven resistance and a
generally unpleasing process.
