  I second Tom's suggestion to post a picture of this Unidentified 
Fotographic Object. As a guess from the description, it might be a 
reverse mate. If so, it would screw on to the front of your lens, and 
then allow the lens to be attached to your camera backwards- for fixed 
focus macro.
