Hey Andrew,

I went through the usual obsessive research before making my choices of
P&S cameras:

1st choice) Ricoh GR1v
<http://home1.pacific.net.sg/~kennetht/GR1specs.html> Discontinued, but
Robert White still has a few of them:
<http://www.robertwhite.co.uk/35mmOthers.htm#LabelRicoh> Truly
pocketable, 28mm f2.8 lens, and probably the best manual controls of
any compact camera ever.

2nd choice) Leica Minilux Zoom
<http://www.leica-camera.com/produkte/compact/miniluxzoom/index_e.html>
Zoom is nice, and there is definitely something about the coatings
Leica puts on their lenses....

I actually took both of them (Minilux Zoom with 100, GR with 400 print
film--and a Holga) on our honeymoon, and got absolutely superb results.
I can send you an image or three if you like.

I got my Minilux Zoom at a local Ritz Camera affiliate. They have a 10
day no-questions-asked return policy, so you can try it out and take it
back if it doesn't suit you.

OTOH, the Stylus Epic is water resistant, which may trump all other
features and the image quality of the above. (I have one of those too.
Image quality was noticeably inferior, IMO, to the two above.) If I had
a decent slide scanner I could show you.....

Batteries are kind of a non-issue I think--as was said, they're small
and light, and lithium ones last a long time.
