I think this issue deserves giving that 'old OM2' a try.

I don't think a plain OM2 would fire with dead batteries, neither on Auto
nor on Manual. 
When batteries almost dead (battery check diode should blink), maybe either
model behaves different. Just a thought. Since plain OM2 doesn't have the P
circuit and the red led in the viewfinder, it might need less current and
maybe can still trip the shutter with some accuracy.

Then your comment on how it used to lock up now and then.
Read John's advice starting with 'do yourself a favor...'.
Maybe you have this 'old style OM2' and need to make some mods in the
battery chamber.
I would like to know which is its serial number and curtain pattern, please.
