Older lenses may develop some slop in the helicoid tubes, but not as much as
you describe. Sounds more like the screws under the focus rubber have come
loose and the ring has partially disengaged from the focus mechanism. If
so, infinity focus couldn't possibly be right anymore. You're not being
picky, lens needs work.
