How in the world would he determine the prescription for reading
glasses?  Bifocals?  Trifocals?

Many pilots have trifocals so they can read the instrument
panels.  Sometimes, they have an additional (quadfocal?) spot in
the top of the lenses for reading the overhead panels.

The typical trifocal mid-range lens is usually appropriate for
viewfinder correction.

My eyesight is the worst at 2-meters.  Bummer, ain't it? 
Fortunately a -1.0 diopter works wonders for me.
