You're missing a VERY important point here, Winsor - Neither Nikon nor
Canon has designed a line of lenses specifically for use with their
digital bodies; and neither company contends that they have specific
lenses that produce the best images with their DSLRs. Olympus designed
the camera and lenses from the ground up, to be used together, and
contend that using other lenses will produce less than optimal images.
So, again, why would they want people running around getting less than
optimal results with the E-1?

specifically designed to use lenses designed for it?

The answer, of course, is "no way." So given that Olympus contends that
its E-1 lenses are needed to get the most out of the sensor - and given
that it contends that lenses designed for film SLRs will not provide
optimal images - why would Olympus want to release the adapter only to
have OM users bitch and complain far and wide about the results they
obtain when using those lenses? Would the sale of a few hundred bodies
be worth more to the company than the bad publicity that would result
from the bad mouth of the E-1 system based on the use of OM lenses?

Funny, but it seems to work for Nikon and Canon. And if you want to see
complainers visit a Canon forum. Most are very happy slapping their 35mm
lenses on their digital bodies and spending lots of buck for new extra
wide angle lenses for digital. We all know that special digital lenses
was a lot of hype except for maybe wide angles anyway. The evidence is
all around you. Bad marketing doesn't make the E-1 a bad camera though.
