the average Aussie 'leccy kettle element wastes some 2400 Watts of power
 (240V x 10A) as heat which it dissipates into the coolant (the water
you're boiling). try doing that at 110V- though at 110V you probably
stand a better chance of surviving accidental contact! 

At one point, they were making elements for those ceramic kettles with
plate elements- just a pair of 2-inch (50mm) square flat plates a
half-inch (12mm) apart, the resistance of the water between them was the
dissipating element- wattage highly unpredictable!!. as the plated
corroded away they becam less & less effective...

safety rules now mean that elements are fully enclosed in an earthed
metal sheath...
