Ok, I agree with you about 34 or 40db if you interpret it by power
ratio, but one just used to the linear ratio like using on audio,
sound output is also power but people use linear ratio like the S/N
ratio of tape recorder or power amplifier.

May be you are right if you have really technically measure the
density of a film. But the personal film scanner today may not be poor
than your old design drum. Actually I was wrong about the quote of
LS4000, Nikon claim a D-range of 4.2 not 4.0. I think a total dark is
much more than 4.0 otherwise Nikon (and probable Polaroid SS120, 4.2
D-Max) are making joke about their D-range.
