I agree that fantastic prints can be made by a knowledgeable person working
with Photoshop and a top-line printer. And you're right, Jan,
pre-processing advantages go to the Adobe worker over the darkroom worker no
doubt. Some things are easier in Photoshop for sure, like getting all the
dust off once and for all!

I'm having some of my 4x5s scanned and doing Crystal Archive Lightjet prints
of some of my images for 2 reasons - one is the dust and pre-processing
advantages, the other is I can't print larger than 20x24 in the darkroom and
some folks want 30x40 or bigger.

But don't discount the time and effort to get the image right in PShop. For
one thing, test prints are, at best, a 2-day turnaround! vs 20 minutes in
the darkroom. Also, I have 3 images that I'm having worlds of trouble
getting 'right' in the computer domain. Very frustrating. And most
frustrating of all are **profile** problems making some saturated yellows
appear GREEN in the computer print (ever see a green sunset??) and
**out-of-gamut** problems which can make it impossible to get on paper what
you see on the slide.

All this said, I'd still put up a well-printed Cibachrome against a good
Ink-jet of the *same* image and expect the Ciba to have more depth, color
and 'look' to it.

George - who does see the uses for digital no doubt.
