Remember when music CDs were touted as indestructable because of the digital
error correction? What a crock that was! DVDs are also very vulnerable, but
deliver a quality image and sound that VHS can't match.

My problem with VHS is that they deteriorate over time. I'm concerned about
losing my precious home movies to the slow deterioration while on the shelf
in the box. I had one burst while rewinding it. The clear plastic reel just
shattered. I was able to disassemble it and recover the tape relatively
unscathed (whew). I've found that many of the oldest tapes now have some
problems making synch in the new VCRs I have. Vertical roll and tracking
problems are creeping in. They've been stored away from power sources,
televisions and speakers, but still fade with time.

Heavy handling and abuse, the VHS tapes are pretty tolerant. But for long
term storage, I'm more than a little concerned...
