If you have real time scanning though it will not matter. I do not scan
attachments as they come in. Real time gets if you open them though

Subject: [OM] Regarding ISPs and Virus filtering

Just to strike some fear into some of you...

ISPs that have incorporated virus filtering on their email
servers may give you a false sense of security.

There are certain scenarios where the virus check is not
performed on inbound and outbound email. Depending on the
servers/routers configuration the catch rate ranges from
80%
. This is on well-known, easy to find, garden-variety
viruses. That means that 50f all email viruses still get
through.

The passed viruses are much more common on inbound emails than
outbound emails. Our system catches nearly 1000f the outbound
email viruses.

At work, we have our own corporate email server system with
multiple levels of virus protection--most of which are
automatically updated hourly or daily. To say that it works is
an understatement. I can't even mention a virus without the
mail system bouncing it! I attempted to run this new one past
it and it immediatelly choked it right down and registered
alarms halfway across the building.

Personally, I only use yahoo mail and webmail. These systems
are much less likely to get the flue than MS Outlook. Still, I
am extremely cautious with attachments. Bugbear only registered
as a virus when I asked for the attached file to be scanned.
Normally, contaminated attachments are immediately dumped prior
to getting to my inbox.
