what
appeared to be some sort of black mould growth. Any suggestions as to the
best way to clean this? I used lens cleaning fluid on some of them which
was
partially effective.

There are a half dozen companies that make film cleaning solutions: Delta,
Edwal, Ethol, Pebeo, Photographic Solutions, and Rexton. There may be
others. Most appear to be alcohol-based, so you might be just as well off
mixing up your own concoction with denatured alcohol. That's the good
news. The bad news is that the black stuff, mold, fungus, whatever you
want to call it, may have eaten through the emulsion so that when it's
cleaned away, all that's left is a clear spot.

Good luck.
