Regardless of whether you get a longer lens or start using a converter, I
think that you'll need some form of camera support. Yes, in strong light you
may get shutter speeds fast enough to capture a reasonable shot hand held,
but the light will probably be too harsh for a really nice photo and I find
that mid day isn't ususally the best time to find critters. Your best bet
may be a combination of a simple monopod for when you leave your vehicle and
either one of those window clamps or a bean bag for shots from inside the
truck. If you use quick release plates, that may save some aggravation.

BTW, you mention that you managed to fill about a third of the frame with
the moose. It seems as though "environmental wildlife" photography, which
shows the animal in its surroundings (as opposed to the
fill-the-entire-frame portrait shots) is all the rage right now. I hope you
share your moose photos with us.
