Subject: [OM] Share my joy!

Hi Zuiks:

The package arrived in my office this morning. I seldom bid on "that
certain auction site whose name I dare not utter", since I don't really
NEED any more gear (at the moment). However, I noticed a nice Tokina
f/2.8~4.3 28~70 mm (macro) zoom for auction, with about two hours left
on the auction. I already have a nice 35~70 Tamron zoom (from list
member Tom Scales - thanks Tom!), and really like a short zoom as a
"walking around" lens. "Oh, by the way, the lens comes with an
black-body OM-2, but don't bid much for the body, 'cause it's jammed",
advised the seller. Being a *real* cheapskate, I bid $65 for the
package, expecting to be sniped. My fellow Zuiks must have slept
through this one, because the final bid was $57.

Okay, I have secretly thought to myself that all of the "great buy on an
OM-2" stories were mostly urban legend. Careful inspection showed the
body to be in nice shape. A little wear on the top plate, around the
strap lugs, and the previous owner's name scratched on the base plate
(nothing a Winder 2 wouldn't fix!) The correct BLACK motor drive cap
and battery cap were in place. It also came with a hot shoe, but it is
the original "Fix" shoe, not the correct Shoe 2. The back is in almost
perfect condition, with none of the brassing that you normally see
around the film holder.

The mirror was locked in the "up" position, and the self-timer lever was
set. Jammed! I carefully opened the cover with my non-marring Lincoln
penny. A Duracell DL1/3N fell out. Things are looking up! I put in
two Everready 357 cells, and reset it. Mirror pops down, camera comes
to life! Ran through all of the shutter speeds with the camera set to
manual. They all sounded good. Now that the mirror was down, I could
determine that it has a focusing screen 1-1, in nice condition. The
self-timer now works fine as well.

I put a 50 on it and compared readings on auto with my OM-2n. They
seemed to track each other. I quickly shot a roll of film, and took it
to the one-hour photo place. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, since the
light seals don't look too good.

The lens appears to be in excellent condition, and included a 62 mm Hoya
Skylight filter.

I would like to officially submit this purchase to the group as a
"Fang".

Bill (grinning from ear to ear) Stanke
