What exactly are rare earth..."I just wanna celebrate another way of livin"...sorry had to get that out. What are rare earth elements? I have a very clear and scratch free 50mm F1.4 G Zuiko, just for collection...

Recently there was discussion about the rare earth elements used on the
55mm
f1.2 lenses. As I appear to have missed the earlier thread can someone refresh my memory on the significance of the rare earth elements. Also the breakpoint in the serial nos. at 137000. As I do not know the significance of the rare earth element which is a better lens - the earlier or the later
version, both optically and from the collecting point.
