I remember recording some artists from WindamHill
(Barbara Higgins & Darrel Anger and some others)
live, and one of the players getting real snooty with me
about how "I'm an acoustic musician, and want that
sound on tape, you little s^*%!" I looked at him, then I looked
at the rack of effects units he had plugged into the transducer
for his instrument and just shrugged...

OTOH, Recording John Hammond Jr. was a joy! Just him, his
guitar and harmonica and 1 SM-58... whoo what a performance!

But still, there's that transducer in the way...

Obligatory OM content: I was between cameras at the time(s) so
none at all...

How is manipulating the sound of my instrument electronically
different from manipulating it through breath control?

To bring this back on topic - would you differentiate between
cropping and editing in the darkroom and doing the same thing in
photoshop? Ultimately, isn't photography allabout the image you
produce rather than the method used to produce it?
