[OM] Left and Right Handed Tripod Rings?

A question for the experts.... do the tripod rings for the 85~250 f/5 and 300 f/4.5 come in both left and right hand configurations? By that, I mean which side of the lens is the knob on.... Looking around on e*bay I've found pictures of lenses with the knob on either side, but with the "foot" properly facing forward. What might be the reason for two configurations? Do I need both? Which normally comes with these lenses? I bought one of these lenses and it arrived with the ring on the wrong way, perhaps to get the knob on the other side???? I might add it was a little difficult getting the ring off, whereas it goes on and off quite smoothly in the proper orientation....... I believe that I've seen mentioned on the list that the tripod ring is the same for the 85~250 and the 300, but I don't recall a discussion or even mention of the 'handed-ness' of the ring.

As always, enlightenment will be greatly appreciated!

P.S. My copy of the 85~250 is not really 'constant focus' over the zoom range, thought the shift is not very large.... is this normal, a sign of wear, or generally unheard of?

Curt
