[OM] OM-1N, metering way off

Subject: [OM] OM-1N, metering way off

I just picked up two black-body OM1s; one OM1MD, one OM1N. Both with flash
shoe; OM1N has motor drive cap, _box_, foam, manual, strap still in bag..

Both in really nice shape; use marks, very minimal brassing I can see..
CDN$125 for each.

Now, the OM1MD works fine -- set it to ISO 100, point it at a sunny day,
f16, and it wants to be at 1/125th, which is what I'd expect (I think?).

The OM1N, though, is a lot less happy. The meter is alive, but unless I
point it at darkness, the needle is way off into the + section. Even setting
the film to 25 and the shutter speed to 1/1000, it's still at +; if I put my
hand in front of the lens, the needle moves, but..

My first thought was that it might be the wrong sort of battery; they say
"PX 625A Alkaline" on them, which suggests they're not the old mercury ones
-- but the weird thing is that the OM1MD seems to be working fine. Should I
expect the metering to be _this_ far off because of the wrong battery? Is
there some other more obvious thing I'm doing wrong here?

 thanks,
