While in Alaska last summer, I had a 60-300mm and we were supposed to stay 
100 yds from the whales.  A 400 or 500 would have been nice, however was able 
to record the whales fairly well with the 300.  I guess the real answer 
depends on how close the come to shore.  When one came within a few feet of 
the stern of the small boat we were in, the 60mm was not wide enough to get 
its entire tail in the frame.  Bill Barber
