I want to play! What about if you held the camera securely while it was
mounted on the tripod firmly, then released the shutter button using a cable
release curled around into your fingers. If the tripod holds the camera
securely the likelihood of inducing vibrations large enough to affect
resolution (short of sneezing during the exposure) seems minimal to me. But
then, a careful squeeeeezzzzee on the shutter button with the finger (not a
jab or poke!) seems like it might be as shock-free as a cable release.
Vibration dampening by holding in your hands probably depends on the
frequency of the vibrations, which probably depends on the source. So in
summary, hold it if you want to, and test for yourself, then do whatever you
believe in. I may try this out using some long lenses and see if I can
discern any differences in the negatives.
