Nobody seems to have mentioned two places I would add:
Stopping for abalone in Morro Bay.
Stopping in Big Sur for some spectacular seascapes; indeed, for
landscapes in general.
I could spend a month just photographing florilegia around and off the
road from San Francisco to Sacramento; but that's probably more a Spring
trip.
A day's trip up and down the Napa Valley, sampling at the wineries, is
always fun; but one really ought to have a "designated driver," so one
can enjoy the fruit of the vine.
