I too drive a Volvo (240 Wagon--holds all the OM Camera gear very nicely). 
I think it has "something" (is it a gene expressing itself?)  to do with 
quest for design excelling in both form and function in a somewhat 
understated way (compact, not flashy, etc.). Maybe some other tools we have 
all ended up picking too.
