Coffee table book is typically a large format (big pages) full-color glossy
book with many pictures and limited text. They can be very good, but often
the writing lacks depth and only serves as another graphic element on the
page. The term 'coffee table book' is because these are the kind of books
you buy to leave lying on the coffee table when people visit, so they can be
impressed with your book about "Great Cars of the Twentieth Century" or
such. Sometimes these books are so large-format that you could attach legs
and make them into a coffee table...
