US bills in an envelope. It's so difficult for small amounts that I now
keep a stash of US currency and use it to buy small bits from the states
(like Morgan Sparkes leather!). This got so useful that I now look for
small items like good filters to sell on eBay as cash deals. (Very 3rd
world - but, with the AUD where it is...)
You can walk into a bank and change it - my sister changed french francs in
a small country town without too much trouble. Can't remember if they
wanted to see her passport, though, like they used to in the old days. Just
tell them it's left over from a holiday trip. I've even exchanged it with a
work colleague who was going to Hawaii on vacation!
It is a constant irritation to me that international transactions are so
difficult. They should not be!
