Well, mine does have the socket, which is nice as I am playing with the idea
of making a wireless remote control for it (and for my 2 el-cheapo Winders)

I put alkalines in it for now. As I won't be using it regularly, NiMHs or
NiCads would probably have fallen victim to self-discharge by the time I
want to use it. So I think for me it makes sense to keep it loaded with
alkalines so it will instantly be ready for use when the need arises, and to
temporarily replace them with freshly charged NiMHs or NiCads for occasions
where I know in advance that I will be using it.

By the way, cost is not too bad, as the specs say a set of alkalines is good
for about 60 films with 36 exposures each, and I buy TDK brand alkalines
cheaply at Aldi for about the equivalent of $ 1.40 a 4-pack. I figure,
though, that NiMHs will give me a little more speed than alkalines, and
NiCads even a little more than the NiMHs - though I doubt it will be
significant for my purposes.
