I was quite close, actually.  A visual inspection of the underside of
the advance lever revealed a burr where one of the ball bearings runs up
against one of the inset pins, which was catching on the ball rather
than pushing it down.  A few gentle strokes with a needle file and all
is well again, without the need for further dismemberment.  Well, almost
all - having carefully removed the lever so as not to lose the ball
bearings, and having filed off the offending burr, dorkowitz here picks
up the body to refit the advance lever, forgetting that they are still
there, held in only by gravity.

Doh!!! Still, it's easier to move into the "ready to go" position now
there's only one ball.
