John, the best AA alkaline batteries I've tried are Kodak alkalines. They seem to last longer in everything and recharge flashes quicker. A Pop Photo test seemed to confirm this.

Lithium AA batteries are outstanding, especially for cold weather use, and storage life is outstanding. Older flash units seem to recycle quicker. However I'd recommend "wearing down" AA lithiums a bit before using 'em in older equipment. I literally smoked an old flash unit with a fresh set. Amazingly, that flash unit still works. But now I fire several pops in a newer flash to take the edge off those lithiums before putting 'em in old flash units.

Also, even after lithiums won't recycle a flash quickly enough anymore there's usually still enough life to power a flashlight for quite a while. Expensive, but damned good batteries.

Everready nicads are good too. I had a set of six AA's last several years in a portable scanner radio with countless recharges using the radio's internal recharger. In a flash they'd recycle super quick but didn't last long. OTOH, I haven't found a 9-volt rechargeable worth a damn.

...Is there any one AA battery that has a longer life than others...
