This is from the preface to Bown's book of portraits 'Men of Confidence'
(Chatto & Windus, London 1987

"My early Rolleiflex portraits were backed up by the occasional photoflood,
but by the time I had graduated to the Olympus OM 1 with 50mm and 85mm
lenses I found everything was possible with available light, and that 1/60th
at f2.8 on Tri X film was the recipe for the majority of the later
portraits. These were mostly taken indoors with the sitter in the strongest
possible pool of light by a window"

In his forward to the book, Snowdon comments on her working 'with very
little equipment.......and the result is photography at its best'

Later on he says 'I'm sure she never discusses speeds and stops and filters
and which is the best camera to use - one that doesn't break down is the
simple answer.'

Cheers,
Michael Cosby

are three other people."
