Me too, Toni. I remember being appalled by the excessive contrast when I had
the first results from the MC 50/f1.8 that I bought because it was not what
I was used to from a 50mm Zuiko, but I've now come to terms with the idea
that I can use the MC version in dull weather and the 'real' one in sunny
conditions.
The original range of Zuikos were multicoated *only* when necessary - wide
primes and zooms - and Olympus only jumped on the multicoat-everything
bandwagon in response to the competition. So stick to lenses from the
original range and avoid the non-essential MC versions. When scanning
pictures, it's easy to increase contrast digitally, but if shadow and/or
highlight detail has been lost due to excessive contrast, you can't recover
it.
I've just had my Olympus 35RD test film prints back and they're of
delightfully low contrast with detail in both shadows and highlights even
though many were taken in harsh, low sunlight. Whether or not that's caused
by the rear element scratch (there are no signs of any other effects), I
don't mind, and have decided to keep the camera.
