I'll bite too...

I have had two weddings (and hopefully no more!). I've done this both
ways (by a Pro and by guests).

My first wedding was shot by a local professional newspaper photographer
who was a friend of my mom's. This guy is incredible...his news
photography is truly artistic and incredible and he has received many
National awards for his work (Schmuel Thaler is his name and I respect
his work highly). He did weddings at one time so was experienced but no
longer did them. He did ours as a favor to my mom for a moderate charge
and let us have all the negs to order our own prints from. Incredible
work, as good as I have ever seen from any wedding pro. Great deal. We
were lucky...too bad that the wedding wasn't quite so fortunate.

On to my second marraige last May. Many here may recall my announcing to
the OM-list our plans to have guests shoot the wedding. In reality it
worked out quite well and we are very pleased with the results, no
regrets. But it was not without risk...that we assumed by making that
decision. Keep in mind that we were on a very tight budget...what with
it being the second time around for both of us and Lena and I are not
financially well off. As it turns out one of our guests was a
photographer who really got into shooting with one of my OM-2Ss
(mandatory OM content) with a short zoom and T32. He was all over the
place like a maniac blowing through rolls of NPH. A couple other guests
really took to the IS-2 and got some great shots with it. My wife and I
had another OM-2S and her Stylus Epic at our table during the reception
and we got some intersting shots with those. My day-job boss had his
digital camera and caught some really great moments with it. My mom got
some good ones with her Stylus Epic zoom. All combined we have a great
persepective of the event from many different views...something that no
single professional photographer could have accomplished. What we did
not get was the assortment of standard shots, the MF portrait work, etc.
that we would have from a Pro. Do we me miss that? Not really... We are
very pleased with what we did get and are happy and that is really what
counts. But, we know we were lucky too...

In other words the decision is all about the bride and groom's (and
their families) expectations, not just a limited budget. It sounds to me
like John L. is very much up to the task his wife "volunteered" him for
(fortunately for him) but I sure can understand the trepidation as I
sure wouldn't want to be volunteered that way. (Maybe if the bride and
groom were to drive by at say 200mph with helmets on I could shoot
it...;-)...otherwise forget it since I know where my limitations are.)
Bottom line is that the decision should not be made on budget alone,
rather what results the bride and groom expect and that all needs to be
made very clear up front. As all our resident wedding pros on this list
will no doubt remind us, shooting weddings is not easy and takes a
certain amount of experience and specific knowledge that is not easily
understood by brides and grooms as well as "photographer friends"
sometimes. Scary... I'm glad John has what it takes equipment-wise and
am confident he can pull off what his wife set him up for. Let's all
encourage him in this because we all know it isn't easy!
