Taking up the slack in the film can before releasing the rewind button/knob (depending on which OM) keeps the film in position. I have done it on several occasions with good results.

It is also possible to make a reference mark on the film where you started it in the camera. Shoot your first image, then rewind and start the roll over lining up the reference mark, and remembering where on each frame the first image was. Remember to underexpose each shot by 1 stop.

I also have taken fireworks shots with cityscapes on a single time exposure. There is enough light from the city and the fireworks to make the sky a color other than black. The buildings end up a combination of silhouette from the light contamination, and lit up from the fireworks. I'll try to post my attempts from July 4 tomorrow for you to see what I mean.

Thanks for the suggestion. However I didn't mention that the guy in the
MODERN PHOTOGRAPHY article was suggesting the following: Pick a Skyline
scene and under expose it at twilight. This would allow a visible Cityscape
over which the later (in darkness) fireworks would be exposed in the same
frame. So, he has two different light levels and the Cityscape will be
exposed twice (thus the need for the film to remain unmoved) and the
fireworks once.
