Oops. Should have read closer. You were using an OM-10, which at best can
run "normal auto" not TTL auto. You're right. If you were using a T-20 or
T-32 in "normal auto," or some other flash for which a given power setting
requires a specific aperture, the wider aperture setting will require less
light from the flash. In any event, just reducing the light output won't
rid you of it, but it does reduce the prominence to make it less detectable
if it's marginal to begin with. I've never had any redeye from a human
using a T-20 and T-32 on an OM-10, OM-1n or OM-4 flash shoe. (Cats and
dogs are another story.) Been lucky, I guess.

[I was thinking TTL auto mode on an OM-2[n,sp] or OM-4[ti] which the OM-10
cannot do. That mode allows any aperture, and different film speeds used
at the same aperture would require more zap from the T-20 or T-32 with a
slower film.]

In very low light, I suggest using a flash handle (BG2 would be ideal) and
a diffuser, or the flash extender, or something like a Stroboframe to
elevate the flash more. A flash handle does take the off-center from
directly above the lens, which can result in some unwanted shadows. I try
to use a diffuser whenever possible. It drops a T-32 GN from 105 to about
72; during a huge birthday party and reception I pulled it off because
there wasn't enough GN for what I was doing.
