As far as I remember there was a question about a similar problem with the
OM 40  some weeks ago. Don`t know how it ended. Maybe you could find
out in the archive who already asked.

Hmm. Did you use auto mode? 
If there is low light, the ADM in auto mode is able to produce very long
exposure times (OM 2 up to 4 min. and more). 
So this 'strange' behaviour would be correct, at least for a OM2 .

Now I´ve seen the OM40 is limited to 2 seconds.

I had a OM 40 where this happened often, even in bright light. I removed the
batteries, and then the camera worked well for another couple of pictures....

I exchanged the camera where I bought it. They sad it is a electronic fault.
Now knowing more about OM`s I`d guess that some dirt, etc hold back
the second shutter curtain. A CLA would have been necessary....

As long as the camera works fine for other photos I won`t bother too much.
