While, having been an Oly list member for several years, this information is
not new to me, the question never occurred to me until reading it again
right now: 
As the cleaned uncoated areas reflect light as if plated, why do the
manufacturers bother plating the prisms in the first place? Seems like an
unnecessary effort and a waste of materials.
