"We advise outdoorsmen to wear noisy little bells on
their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren't
 expecting them."

Sorry Gregg, but I couldn't help notice this in your message. A similar advice
or
recommendation about how to avoid bear contact was issued a couple of years ago
from the authorities in one of counties in the north of Sweden. The
recommendation
for all outdoor people was to carry the same little bells that are carried by
some
reindeers to help the reindeer owner and his people locate the heards. When
people
from the local population heard about this recommendation they issued a warning
saying that this might turn out to be quite fatal, since the specific animals
that
carry those bells usually are the first one's to be killed by the bears(!).
Whenever such a kill has occured the bells themselves are usually also found
crushed or chewed on as well, indicating that the bears actually hate the
specific
sound of the those bells. So much for the bear experts...
