I agree with Paul.  I also have a Vivitar 90 Series 1 macro.  The 1:1
adapter does have some glass in it, but it is not a 2x TC, and, it does not
need any adapter ring.
Downside of the 90w/adapter is THE THING IS HEAVY! Needless to say, all
metal (oh, all right, except for the glass).
It is my 90 that Gary Reese evaluated.  I've had mine since '77 & love it.
For what it's worth, it has a 58mm thread (or is that 2 5/16") <g>.
